Aseneskak Casino Looks to Shuttter La Pas Operation and Move to Winnipeg

The Aseneskak Casino, located just outside of The Pas in Manitoba, may soon be closing. If that occurs, the shuttering of the casino will represent the second major employer in area to announce plans to close. Earlier, Tolko Industries announced its own plans to stop its operations in December, 2016. Tolko Industries is a forest products company employing 332 people in The Pas area in northern Manitoba.

Employees Impacted by Aseneskak Casino Closure

About 150 employees potentially will be effected by the closure of the Aseneskak Casino. However, there is some talk that the closure may not be permanent. There is a proposal to reopen the casino closer to Winnipeg. If the casino does end up moving, employees at the existing location will be offered the chance to relocate, according to the CEO of Aseneskak Casino, Suzanne Barbeau Bracegirdle.

Reasons for Closure of Aseneskak Casino

The plans to close the Aseneskak Casino boils down to finances. According to the company’s CEO lass that a quarter of the casino’s gambling tables and gaming machines are utilized.

The company maintains it might have better luck nearer to a larger city. Because of this thought, the possibility to relocated to the Winnipeg area is receiving serious consideration by the executive management of Aseneskak Casino. CEO Suzanne Barbeau Bracegirdle says less than a quarter of the casino’s gaming machines and tables are being used.

The Aseneskak Casino features the Eagle’s Nest Restaurant and Loounge. The restaurant features daily lunch and dinner specials. The lounge features favorite adult beverages of different types.

Hit to the Economy

The prospect of the casino closing and about 150 area resident ending up unemployed will blow a significant blow to the economy. Coupled with the lost of jobs associated with Tolko Industries closure, the casino departure will result in about 500 people being unemployed in the area.

With the state of the economy in northern Manitoba, there is a real possibility that many of the current employees of the casino will elect to relocate if the company reopens outside Winnipeg. Again, the company has yet to make a final decision about relocating as opposed to just shuttering all together. At present, there is no definitive time line regarding when Aseneskak Casino will make a final decision about closing in The Pas and reopening outside Winnipeg.
